Your complete roadmap to studying in Australia
Use Study in Australia (studyinaustralia.gov.au) to search programs. ANU, Melbourne, and UNSW are the most popular among Indian students.
Academic requirements, IELTS/PTE/TOEFL scores, and any prerequisite subjects. Group of Eight universities are competitive; IELTS 6.5–7.5 required.
Apply directly to university international offices. No centralised portal. February and July are the main intakes. Apply 4–6 months in advance.
On admission and tuition deposit payment, the university issues an eCoE (Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment). This is required for your student visa.
Apply online via the IMMI account portal. Pay visa fee (AUD $710). Provide eCoE, OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover), financial documents, and GTE statement.
After visa grant, travel to Australia. On campus: get student ID, set up bank account, register with Medicare (for South Asian community health), and begin orientation.
Sydney/Melbourne: AUD $2,000–$3,500/month. Smaller cities (Adelaide, Brisbane): AUD $1,500–$2,500. Accommodation: AUD $800–$1,800. Food: AUD $400–$600. Transport: AUD $150–$300.
Undergraduate: AUD $25,000–$48,000/year. Postgraduate (Coursework): AUD $28,000–$52,000/year. Research (MPhil/PhD): Many are government-funded (free for domestic; heavily subsidised for international). TAFE: AUD $4,000–$15,000/year.
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory for all student visa holders. Cost: approximately AUD $600–$700/year for single students. Must be maintained throughout your visa.
1. Valid eCoE from an Australian institution. 2. Proof of funds: AUD $29,710/year (first year — recent update). 3. OSHC purchase. 4. GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) statement. 5. English proficiency certificate. 6. Health examination if required.
The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement is critical. Demonstrate strong ties to India, clear study purpose, and intention to return or proceed through legal migration pathways.
After graduation, apply for a 485 visa: 2 years (Bachelor's/Master's in non-regional); 3–5 years (regional); 4 years (any level from regional campus); up to 6 years (PhD graduates). Work unrestricted.
Student visa holders can work 48 hours per fortnight during term time and unlimited hours during holidays. Minimum wage: AUD $23.23/hour. Excellent for covering living costs.
Australia has skill shortages in Engineering, IT, Healthcare, Accounting, Construction, and Education. Skilled Migration (subclass 189/190/491) is a viable PR pathway for graduates.
