Browse EduCanada.ca for programs. Decide between university, college, or polytechnic. Consider location (Quebec vs Ontario vs BC) and PR pathway.

Language Test

IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 for most programs (universities may require 6.5–7.0). TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo may also be accepted.

Apply to Institutions

Apply directly to university international offices or colleges. Ontario universities: OUAC. BC universities: via university websites. Deadlines vary: November–March for Sept intake.

Receive Offer Letter

Conditional or unconditional offer received. Pay deposit to secure your seat. Submit final marksheets to get unconditional offer.

Apply for Student Permit

Apply online via IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada). Submit offer letter, proof of funds (CAD $20,635 for the first year), and passport. Biometrics required.

IRCC requires proof of CAD $20,635 (for first year, outside Quebec) in addition to tuition. This must be demonstrated via bank statements or GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate).

Online applications currently process in 4–8 weeks. Apply as early as possible — ideally 3–4 months before your program start date.

After completing a program of 8 months or more at a DLI, you receive a PGWP equal to your study duration (max 3 years). Spouse/partner may also receive an open work permit.

Canadian work experience gained via PGWP boosts Express Entry CRS score significantly. Many provinces have PNPs specifically targeting international student graduates.

Students can work up to 20 hours/week off-campus during term and full-time during scheduled breaks. Minimum wage varies by province: ONT $17.20/hr, BC $17.40/hr.
