Your complete roadmap to studying in Germany
Choose degree level: Bachelor’s / Master’s / PhD / Ausbildung / Studienkolleg. Use the DAAD search and Higher Education Compass to find programs and compare universities.
Many applicants outside the EU can apply directly; some need a Studienkolleg (one-year preparatory) if their school certificate is not equivalent to the German entrance qualification (HZB).
TestDaF/DSH for German-taught; IELTS/TOEFL for English. Prepare academic transcripts, passport, CV, SOP, LORs, and certified translations. Often applied via uni-assist.
Create a shortlist (3–8 universities) with reach/match/safety options. Deadlines: Summer intake (15 Jan), Winter intake (15 April).
Once admitted, you receive a Zulassungsbescheid. Follow instructions to accept your place, pay the semester contribution, and register.
Prove financial means for a visa via a blocked account (~€11,904/year). Buy valid student health insurance for your visa appointment.

A Blocked Account is a special bank account required by German embassies to demonstrate sufficient funds to live in Germany for one year. Providers include Deutsche Bank, Fintiba, Expatrio, Coracle, and RemitX. Open it after admission, before your visa appointment.
Required amount: €11,208 – €11,904 per year. This includes living costs (€850–€1,100 per month) and Health insurance (~€110 per month).
Public university: No Tuition fees, only Semester fees (~€300). Private universities: Tuition Fees average €5,500.
Visa Fees for adults €75 and for minors €37.5 (subject to change). Travel Expenses (one-way) around 30,000 INR.
