Your complete roadmap to studying in Singapore
Research Programs
Visit university websites directly (NUS.edu.sg, NTU.edu.sg). Singapore universities are highly competitive. Check prerequisites carefully.
Check Eligibility
NUS/NTU require exceptional academic performance (top 5–10% equivalent). IELTS 6.5–7.0 minimum. GRE/GMAT for some graduate programs.
Apply Online
Apply through the university's online portal. Intake: August (main). Some universities have a January intake. Apply between October and February for August intake.
Shortlist & Interview
Universities may conduct interviews for competitive programs. Some departments make offers based purely on academic merit.
Accept Offer & Pay Fees
Accept your offer online and pay the acceptance/enrollment fee. Secure student accommodation — NUS/NTU hostels are popular but limited.
Student's Pass (STP) Application
Apply for a Singapore Student's Pass (STP) via the SOLAR+ system. Your university's International Student Services Office will guide you. Fee: SGD $30 (ICA pass) + SGD $60 issuance fee.
Cost of Living in Singapore
Singapore is Asia's most expensive city. Accommodation: SGD $500–$1,200 (on-campus hostel) or $1,500–$3,000 (private). Food: SGD $400–$700 (hawker centres keep costs low). Transport: SGD $100–$150. Total: SGD $1,500–$3,000/month.
With MOE Tuition Grant (requires 3-year Singapore work bond): SGD $8,000–$18,000/year. Without grant: SGD $25,000–$55,000/year. MOE grant is highly recommended — most international students take it.
Singapore's Ministry of Education subsidises tuition for international students who commit to working for a Singapore-registered company for 3 years after graduation. This dramatically reduces tuition costs.
Singapore Student's Pass (STP)
1. Admission letter from NUS/NTU/SMU or an approved institution. 2. Completed SOLAR+ application. 3. Valid passport. 4. Passport photos. 5. Academic certificates. 6. Medical insurance.
Your university submits the In-Principle Approval (IPA) application on your behalf. Once IPA is granted, travel to Singapore and complete your STP issuance at ICA within 2 weeks of arrival.
Singapore Student's Pass holders can work up to 16 hours/week during term time. Full-time work is allowed during scheduled vacation periods with employer notification.
Scholarships & Career
Singapore's job market is highly international. Key sectors: Banking & Fintech (DBS, UOB, OCBC, MAS), Technology (Google, Grab, Sea), Logistics (PSA), and Biomedical manufacturing.
Graduates from NUS, NTU, SMU, SIT, SUTD, and SUSS may apply for a 1-year Long-Term Visit Pass Plus (LTVP+) to job search or be eligible for an Employment Pass with a job offer.
